Uniform and Dress Standards

Tuesday, Wednesday CGS, and Thursday uniform is CASUAL unless the children are attending mass or a special occasion. Friday uniform is OUTDOOR standard.

We have selected French Toast Official School Wear to bring you a collection of uniforms that is functional with a touch of class. Our goal in requesting uniforms for Regina Mater is to create an atmosphere of unity and calm, a place for focused learning and growth, and a medium for further discovery of our God-given masculinity and femininity.

Students need a Casual Uniform and Mass Uniform.  The Mass Uniform must be worn on picture day, holy days of obligation, and other formal events.  It may be worn at any other time as well.  The Casual Uniform is for all other days.

FRIDAY OUTDOOR UNIFORM (Mariengarten, Bethlehem, Nazareth, Cana, boys and girls)

  • The Friday outdoor uniform aims to be comfortable, modest, and safe. Parents can decide what is best for their students within the dress code. Maryhill is a rugged property with lots of thorns and little shade. Please note that older students violating the dress code will not be allowed to participate until they are in appropriate clothing - especially shorts that do not extend beyond fingertips.

  • Branded apparel should be Regina Mater only, not any other school or organization (scouts, troops, sibling’s schools, etc). Incidental logos are fine if small and non-distracting, such as brand, university, or sports team. No political or politically coded messages are allowed. General Catholic items are allowed with permission. Pro-life t-shirts designed by Regina Mater students are allowed.

  • Check Academy, Target Cat & Jack, or French Toast for affordable pieces with little or no branding.

  • Tops:

    • Any Regina Mater T-Shirt.

    • Plain t-shirts, white, gray, or navy, can be worn until RM T-Shirt ordering is online.

    • Plain camping button-down shirts - no illustrations/graphics beyond a small logo. Navy preferred, khaki ok.

    • No tank tops or spaghetti strap tops.

    • Plain hoodie, no graphics.

    • Rain gear may be needed for light sprinkles. Please avoid licensed characters.

    • Fleece or winter coat. Please avoid licensed characters.

  • Bottoms:

    • Plain navy athletic shorts past fingertips (at or above knee)

    • Jean shorts past fingertips (at or above knee), with a hemmed edge (not frayed cut-offs, no holes)

    • Jeans with no holes (other than small accidental wear at the knee)

    • Jogging pants with no holes (other than small accidental wear at the knee). Athletic pants with small college or pro sports logos are ok if small. If students are distracted by team apparel, this will be revoked.

    • No giant logos across the legs or behind (such as a giant Nike or Adidas logo)

    • Camping pants or cargo pants with small logos - navy preferred, khaki ok

  • Hats:

    • Hats are encouraged, especially wide-brimmed camping hats. Please keep baseball hats as plain as possible. Sports or college logos will be tolerated if students are not distracted.

    • Beanies are fine for cold weather. Please avoid licensed characters. Sports and college logos are tolerated as long as students are not distracted.

    • No political messaging, slogans, or phrases except pro-life items designed by RM students.

    • Put names in all hats.

  • Sunglasses:

    • Sunglasses are encouraged. Please avoid licensed characters.

  • Gloves:

    • Gloves may be needed for field work. We will communicate if families need to buy individually.

  • Shoes:

    • Sturdy hiking boots or shoes are strongly recommended for Maryhill. Work-style cowboy boots are also acceptable. Closed-toe Keen sandals may still allow thorns through the side and are not recommended. Athletic shoes may be ok but sometimes thorns can pierce them as well.

General Uniform Standards

We want our students to learn to dress with modesty and to be well-kept. Therefore, we would request that your family take into consideration the following preferences while at Regina Mater:

Shirts

We ask that shirts be tucked in for neatness and order. Girls are required to wear a white camisole under blouses.

Socks

For safety and health purposes, our students are to wear shoes with socks or tights at all times.

Earrings and Jewelry

We want Regina Mater to be an environment that fosters the discovery of our girls’ God-given femininity while maintaining a focus on education and development. Concerning earrings, we ask that only tasteful studs be worn to school. A small watch may be worn by all students. Religious medals, scapulars etc. may be worn.

Make Up and Nail Polish

Young ladies in high school may choose to wear a minimal amount of make-up. All cosmetics should be in neutral and pale colors. Dramatic make-up detracts from our natural beauty and should not be worn to class. Nail polish should be pale pink or clear.

Hair Guidelines

Hair must be clean and well-groomed. It is highly recommended for girls to wear a ponytail or bun to prevent accidents, avoid lice transmission, and keep a neat appearance.  Hair accessories must be black, brown, navy or white.  (Not pink, green, blue, etc.)

Boys’ hair should be well- groomed and above the collar and out of the face.

Head lice is a significant problem for school children today due to medicine-resistant lice.  Please check your children on a regular basis using a lice comb.  Children may return to school after a lice treatment; preferably through lice combing (the most non-toxic and effective treatment).  Other essential oil sprays may help in the prevention on lice and are encouraged.

Uniform Closet

Regina Mater maintains a Uniform Closet so families can donate old uniforms in good condition.  (Pants and shirts with significant stains, rips or tears will be thrown away.)  Anyone is free to take uniform pieces that will serve their family.

Sweaters and Outerwear

Outwear (coats, hats, gloves, scarves) may not be worn in the building.  For warmth, students are allowed to wear any SOLID NAVY sweater or sweatshirt.  NO HOODIES.  French Toast sells a number of appropriate sweaters, sweatshirts, and coats.

When temperatures are near freezing, girls may wear leggings under the uniform.

Backpacks and Lunchboxes

The children may carry a solid-colored backpack or satchel-style book bag and lunchbox. No licensed characters or obvious logos.

Dress Standards for Out-of-Uniform Days

Clothing should be clean, neat and well fitted (though not tight), in good repair and modest in cost.It is important to dress for individual and collaborative learning and not for personal display.

Shirts

Shirts must have sleeves. Necklines may be of any style except low V- or scoop-necks (unless layered on camisole modestly). Discreet manufacturer’s logos or school, college or university designs are allowed. Slogans and licensed characters are not permitted. Shirts must completely cover the midriff. No spaghetti straps.

Pants

Slack-style pants, ‘Bermuda’ length shorts and dress jeans are appropriate for non-uniform occasions.  No tears or rips in jeans.

Dresses/Skirts

Dresses and skirts should meet the same standard as student uniforms, reaching at least to the knee or longer, including any kick-pleat or walking splits. Dresses must have sleeves and necklines may be of any style except low V- or scoop-necks.  No spaghetti straps.

Shoes

Safety and reliability are the principal considerations, so ‘beach-style’ sandals or flip-flops are not permitted. Heels over 1” are not permitted. Formalwear shoe styles (cocktail attire) are not permitted.

Jewelry/Accessories

Accessories should be safe, discreet, of modest value and not distracting to other students.

Hair

Hair must be clean and well-groomed. Idiosyncratic colors or styles are distracting to other students.  Young men must be clean shaven.

Miscellaneous

Hats are inappropriate inside school buildings. Oversized, ill-fitting or military clothing and footwear are not acceptable. Outerwear must conform to the above Dress Standards.

The final decision regarding dress and appearance rests with the administration.
